Event table notes

Event data
Name: 1st New South Wales - South Australia Telegraphic Match
Place: Sydney and Adelaide
Start date: 24 May 1871
End date: 2 June 1871

Notes:
According to Staunton, the match was begun on May 24 but adjourned for several days due to weather. The Westminster Papers say that it was concluded after several adjournments on 2 Jun. 1871. This is confirmed by reports in local newspapers of the time. W.J. Fullarton did not actually complete his game against R. Smith, not being able to attend the last session, so it was played out by R.M. Steele. I am not recording it for either player, since Fullarton only played 18 moves of it and Steele played the remaining 44 moves (see the Australian Town and Country Journal of 10 Jun. 1871, p.729).
