Notes: |
The crosstable in the Schachzeitung of Sep. 1871 (p.261) is inconsistent. It shows von Besser against von Rochow as '-+' but von Rochow against von Besser as '--', and von Besser against Rapp as '++' but Rapp against von Besser as '+-'. So either von Rochow or Rapp won one game against von Besser, but it is not clear which. Gaige (and Di Felice) take it to be von Rochow who beat von Besser, but I believe it is more likely to have been Rapp. If it was von Rochow, then von Rochow's total score is 5 and Rapp's is 4, but the totals in the crosstable in the Schachzeitung are 4 for von Rochow and 5 for Rapp, which is consistent with a win by Rapp against von Besser. The total for von Besser is 8 regardless of which of the two won a game against him. Di Felice gives date Aug. 15, 1871. La Grande Storia degli Scacchi gives dates Aug. 18-20, 1871 for the Section I tournament. The Schachzeitung (p.260) says that play started on the Saturday morning (19 Aug. 1871). |
