End date: June 1874 |
|
Notes: |
This was the play-off of a handicap tournament with 16 players divided into 2 sections. Barnett and Delmar each won a section. The play-off was to have consisted of 3 games, but van Winsen says in his biography of Mason (p.291) that Barnett gave up after losing the first game. The Watertown Re-Union of 11 Jun. 1874 and the Meriden Daily Republican of 12 Jun. 1874 say that Delmar won +2-1. Then the Meriden Daily Republican of 19 Jun. 1874 says that Barnett has 'resigned' to Delmar, which suggests an early end to the match, but the Meriden Daily Republican of 3 Jul. 1874 gives the second game. In volume VII of Mackenzie, Mason and Co. (p.30), van Winsen says that just two games were played. |
