Event table notes

Event data
Name: Victorian Tournament
Place: Melbourne
Start date: Mar. 1866
End date: June 1866

Notes:
This was a 32-player handicap tournament. Most of the match results are given, but in some cases only scores part way through the individual match between 2 players and in many cases the odds were not specified in the reports. By combining information from all the reports, it is possible to infer the odds class of 22 out of the 32 players and thus, even when odds are not specified for an individual match, we can sometimes be quite certain what they must have been, knowing the odds classes of the players. The system was clearly a standard one in which players gave Pawn and Move odds to players one class below them, Pawn and Two Moves to players two classes below them and a Knight to players three classes below them. The 22 players we can place form 4 classes. I report here only on the matches between pairs both amongst these 22. Even though we have scores for many of the other matches, without knowing the odds given we cannot rate them. After the first round, there were essentially two separate knock-out tournaments, one amongst the first round winners, and one amongst the first round losers. The four players coming out on top in the first sub-tournament (Burns, Ellis, Sedgefield, P.D. Phillips) got the first four prizes, while the top two in the second sub-tournament (Fleming, Pirani) got 5th and 6th prizes. The 10 players whose odds classes could not be determined were Blair, Exon, Lucas, Targett, Herz, McCarthy, Jamieson, Trowell, Unmack and Monash. Three wins were required to win an individual match. The individual matches rated here for which we have only partial scores are: Phillips-Boom (+2-1=0), won eventually by Phillips; Burns-Phillips (+2-0=0), eventually won by Burns, Ellis-Sedgefield (+2-1=4), eventually won by Ellis; Fleming-Hamel (+1-0=0), eventually won by Fleming; and Pirani-Faussett (+2-2=3), but eventually won by Pirani, so in this case I recorded it as +3-2=3, although there might have been additional draws. In one other case, the score is not quite certain, since Pirani-Sincock is given part way through (28 Apr. 1866) as +2-1=1, but the final result is given (5 May 1866) as +3-0, so I guess that this was an error and the true final score was +3-1=1.
