Event table notes

Event data
Name: New York State Chess Association General Tournament
Place: New York
Start date: 22 Feb. 1894
End date: 22 Feb. 1894

Notes:
A 4 round tournament with a single game per pairing, probably like the championship event a knockout but with other players continuing to compete for lesser prizes. The report in the Brooklyn Daily Standard-Union says that Helms won his third round game by default, but doesn't say who his opponent should have been. No results are given for Pieczonka, Fitch or Huntington in the 3rd round, so one of them defaulted to Helms and it is not clear whether the other two played, but perhaps not. There was a 4th round game between Reitzer and Roething, but the New York Sun of 23 Feb. 1894 gives the result as 0-0, so it is not clear what happened.
