Biographical data
Name: Kempa-Pieczonka, Albert
Also known as: Albert Pieczonka; Albert Kempa; Prof. Kempa-Pieczonka
Born: 10 Feb. 1828
Died: 12 Apr. 1912

Notes:
Name given variously as 'Pieczonka', 'Piectzouka', 'Pleczonka', 'Prieckzonska'. The 8 July 1860 issue of the Era (p.14) has 'Piechonka'. The New York Recorder of 23 Feb. 1894 lists the player at the New York State Chess Association general tournament of 1894 as 'Kempa' instead of Pieczonka. Reichhelm has 'Prieckzonska' playing for the Wilmington Club against the Germantown Club in one 1885 match and then 'Kempa' playing for the Wilmington Club against the Germantown Club in another 1885 match. These two matches were played on 17 Nov. 1885 and 10 Dec. 1885, according to Hilbert in his biography of Shipley (p.32). Confusingly, Hilbert lists 'J.K. Pieconka' as a member of the Wilmington Club team against Germantown in the 17 Nov. match, quoting Steinitz's International Chess Magazine of Dec. 1885 (p.365). This must be an error for Prof. A. Kempa-Pieczonka, as listed in the Columbia Chess Chronicle of 16 June 1888 (p.12), also referred to as Pieconzka-Campa in the New York Recorder of 13 Jan. 1895. The New York Daily Tribune of 21 Jul. 1895 makes it clear that the player in American events from 1885 onwards is indeed Albert Pieczonka from Königsberg, born 1828, who had played with many of the great European players.
