| According to La Régence, Saint-Léon played Journoud in round 1 and Seguin in round 2, but then both Saint-Léon and Seguin appear in round 3. There is a footnote attached to Saint-Léon's name in round 2 saying that he was replacing Warnet, but Warnet also played in round 2, against Preti. Clearly there is an error. Cornil's interpretation is that the footnote should say that Saint-Léon is replacing Journoud, who would thus have beaten him in round 1. But this does not explain why neither Warnet nor Preti appear in round 3 while both Saint-Léon and Seguin do appear. A more likely interpretation is that the footnote is correct but should have been attached to Saint-Léon's name in round 3, not round 2. This implies that Saint-Léon beat Journoud in round 1, lost to Seguin in round 2, but then replaced Warnet in round 3, Warnet having beaten Preti in round 2. The date is given by Cornil as 27-11-1849 but this is mis-copied from La Régence, which gives 24-11-1849, and this must be correct, being the Saturday. One game per pairing in these weekly tournaments, as explained by Delannoy (La Régence, 1849, p.106). |
