A double-round all-play-all tournament. Eight players entered this tournament, and at least two of them, J.M. Hanham and W.S. Wheelwright, played some of their games before withdrawing (Hanham's score is listed as 4-0 and Wheelwright's is listed as 0-2 as of 13 July 1887, though the numbers in the report in the Brooklyn Chess Chronicle of 15 July 1887, p.145, don't add up correctly). D.G. Baird and C. Schubert also withdrew, so that by Sept. 1887 there were only four players left. Since I don't know which opponents were played by those that withdrew, nor the complete scores of the games they played, I am leaving them out and relying on the report regarding the final four in the 15 Sept. issue of the Brooklyn Chess Chronicle (p.178). At that point, the scores between the remaining player only were Lipschütz 3.5-1.5, Ryan 2.5-2.5, J.W. Baird 2.5-3.5, Gedalia, 1.5-2.5. Gedalia had still to play one game each against Lipschütz and Ryan. According to Stephen Davies, who is writing a book on Lipschütz (personal communication), Lipschütz won with a score of 4.5/6, so I deduce that he beat Gedalia in his final game. This leaves the last Gedalia-Ryan game unaccounted for, so I have just left it out, until such time as I find the result. |
