Notes: |
Partial results available. 64-player knockout handicap tournament, with players in 5 classes. Number of games per pairing not indicated, but the comment that Chamier in the 4th round won the first game from Sivinski after a 7-hour battle suggests that more than one game per round occurred. The 4 prizes were won by Sivinski, Martin Winawer, de Vaux and Cousin in that order, and the other 4 quarter-finalists (not in order) were Chamier, Callighan, Gribius and Mentienne. Sivinski beat Cousin in the semi-final and Martin Winawer in the final but number of games are not specified and neither are odds except that an even game between Sivinski and Cousin is given (won by Sivinski). As a conservative estimate, I will take the Sivinski-Cousin match to be a single game played even. No other result is usable. The Feb. 15, 1874 issue of La Strategie indicated that the tournament had lasted not less than 6 weeks, so it may have begun at the end of 1873 and may have ended in late January or early February 1874. |
