Gilberg and La Grande Storia degli Scacchi indicate that the Hosmer-Bock and Mackenzie-Congdon games were defaulted by Bock and Congdon; Gaige, Di Felice, Cree, the Illustrated London News and the Westminster Papers do not indicate that they were defaulted. Feenstra Kuiper gives total scores consistent with Bock and Congdon having defaulted those games. Reichhelm gives totals scores that count all games played and defaulted, except that he gives Judd 9 instead of 7, as if he had played either Elder or Kennicott. Feenstra Kuiper also says that Elder's and Kennicott's scores were struck, and this is in agreement with the account in Gilberg's book, but Cree says they were counted. Whether they were officially counted or not, here I always rate games actually played. The crosstables of Steinitz (in The Field), Staunton (in the Illustrated London News), MacDonnell (in the Westminster Papers), Gilberg, Gaige, Di Felice, and La Grande Storia degli Scacchi show the games between Elder and Hosmer as unplayed. Van Winsen, in volume VII of Mackenzie, Mason and Co. (p.34) shows them as played, and won by Hosmer. Since van Winsen is alone here, I will assume this was an error, though perhaps he has evidence not available to all the other sources. |
