Event table notes

Event data
Name: 1st Yorkshire County Chess Club Meeting - Class A
Place: Bradford
Start date: 23 Jan. 1886
End date: 18 Sep. 1886

Notes:
The first two rounds were played on 23 Jan. 1886; the third was played on 5 June 1886. Four players did not appear and defaulted in the first round: W. Ash defaulted to Schofield, R.M. Macmaster defaulted to T. Spencer, Hudson defaulted to J.E. Hall and R. Whitaker defaulted to E.J. Huntsman. The drawn games in the second round (Wright-Onions, and Whitley-Spencer) were to be played out to decide who went on to the third round, according to the Leeds Mercury of 20 Feb. 1886 (p.7). However, the win by Wright over Onions in the Bradford-Wakefield Woodhouse Cup Match, played on 6 Mar. 1886, was counted also to break the tie for the Yorkshire County Chess Club tournament, so it is not counted again here. Whitley's win over Spencer was reported in the Leeds Mercury of 5 June 1886 (p.7). In the third round, E.J. Huntsman was absent and defaulted to P. Whitley. The report in the Leeds Mercury of 12 June 1886 (p.7) says that White and Whitley would contest in the fourth round, Wright getting a bye. This game was played on 18 Sep. 1886 and won by Whitley, as reported in the 25 Sep. 1886 issue of the Leeds Mercury (p.7). The final between Wright and Whitley was played on 30 Sep. 1886, as reported in the Leeds Mercury of 2 Oct. 1886 (p.7). Steve Mann identifies the 'Wright' at this event as Murrell Wright, but the 2 Oct. 1886 issue of the Leeds Mercury (p.7) has 'F.H. Wright'.
