Event table notes

Event data
Name: 24th Victoria Championship
Place: Melbourne
Start date: 5 Mar. 1912
End date: 12 Apr. 1912

Notes:
This was designed as a 12-player tournament in which players were eliminated after 3 losses (draws counting as half a loss). Di Felice and OzBase indicate that Ockenden defaulted against Gundersen and Grant and that Rainey defaulted against Harrison; Di Felice (but not OzBase) also show Ockenden defaulting against Steele. The Melbourne newspaper reports, especially the Leader give round-by-round results. The Weekly Times of 16 Mar. 1912 (p.2) indicates clearly that Ockenden forfeited to Gundersen in the first round, and less clearly (in the digitized version on the Australian Trove website) that Ockenden forfeited to Steele in the 2nd round. The other forfeits are not mentioned explicitly. I will guess that all three of Ockenden's games were forfeited, as indicated by Di Felice, and thus do not include Ockenden here for rating purposes. OzBase indicates that Lampe beat Read, but Di Felice and the Leader say that Read beat Lampe. Di Felice has 'Lampe, E.H.' at this event, but the other sources have P.A.H. Lampe. Di Felice gives the result of Gunderson against grant as +1-0=1, but OzBase and the contemporary sources make it clear that it was +2-1=1. Lampe had a bye in round 4, Gundersen in round 9. It took 12 rounds to determine the winner.
