Event table notes

Event data
Name: Saint James's Club - Mr. Worrall's Tournament
Place: London, England
Start date: Nov. 1862
End date: Oct. 1863

Notes:
This was an all-play-all handicap of 15 (or possibly 16?) players. When the tournament was originally announced, in the 8 June 1862 issue of the Era, 16 players were listed, with their handicap classes. However, the tournament does not seem to have finally started until much later as the international tournament intervened. The first report of games actually played appeared in the 16 Nov. 1862 issue of the Era. The list of participants then differs from the original list. Green, Hannah, Robey and Humphreys were on the original list but do not appear later. The first full set of scores to date appears in the 28 Dec. 1862 issue of the Era, in which 14 players are listed, while the 31 May 1863 issue gives a full set of scores to date including 15 players. Almost complete scores were given in the 9 Aug. 1863 issue of the Era for 11 players only. That report said that Stewart had won first, and Löwenthal second, but that third was still undecided between Cocking, Sich and Cruikshank. The only information on the final games after that date is the report in the 25 Oct. 1863 issue of the Era that Cocking had won third, but this does not make it clear what additional games were played, so I am using the results reported on 9 Aug. 1863. Aside from the 11 for whom results are given on 9 Aug., there were Saint Bon, Tooke, Willoughby and Wilson, who had results reported on 31 May, but we don't know what scores they accumulated after that date. Not all games were played. I am assuming that missing games were mostly with the 4 players who did not have their scores reported on 9 Aug. 1863. Young's final score is given there as +9-6, which suggests that he played 15 games, and that there was a 16th player. That may have been the case, but it is perhaps more likely that it was an error and that his score was +8-6. Otherwise, it is not clear why he was not in contention for third prize. Ward's score on 9 Aug. 1863 is given as +5-4, though on 31 May 1863 it was given as +5-5. I will take the last score given as correct. Draws were not counted towards totals, but several draws occurred. Drawn games Stewart - Chinnery and Löwenthal - Stewart are given in the 12 July 1863 issue of the Era, and a draw Sich-Cruikshank is given in the 2 Aug. 1863 issue. Since it is hard to include these in the total scores, I include them separately as if they were match results as part of the tournament. The Chess Player's Magazine of Dec. 1863 has a loss by Young giving Pawn and Move odds to Humphreys, who seems, therefore to have been the 16th player. I have no idea of Humphreys' score, however.
