Gaige indicates that the wins by Schiffers over Asharin and von Schmidt were wins by default; Di Felice and La Grande Storia degli Scacchi indicate that they were genuine games. Feenstra Kuiper in Hundert Jahre Schachturniere has 'Liselle' and 'Halprin' where Gaige, Di Felice and La Grande Storia degli Scacchi have 'Lizel' and 'Nerling'. Gaige omits the play-offs; Feenstra Kuiper in Hundert Jahre Schachturniere gives total scores consistent with inclusion of a 1-0 play-off between Chigorin and Alapin, but not the play-off for 3rd between Schiffers and Solvtsov, and also excluding the two default wins by Schiffers. In Hundert Jahre Schachzweikämpfe, Feenstra Kuiper changes Halprin to Nerling and gives 'official' scores, excluding play-offs but including deafulted games by Schiffers. Gaige gives dates 25 Dec. 1878 - 3 Jan. 1879; Di Felice and La Grande Storia degli Scacchi give dates 6 - 16 Jan. 1879. The discrepancy is presumably accounted for by the 13-day lag in the Julian as compared to the Georgian calendar. I use the later dates to be consistent with dates of other events. |
