Name: Melbourne Club Handicap Tournament |
Place: Melbourne |
Start date: 3 June 1867 |
End date: 14 Sep. 1867 |
|
Notes: |
The results of this 23-player all-play-all handicap tournament can be reconstructed with a fair degree of confidence from reports of pairings for each round, game results, and running totals given in Bell's Life in Victoria, as well as full game scores there and in the Australasian, from 8 Jun. 1867 to 28 Sep. 1867. Some guesswork is involved to resolve inconsistencies in these reports, but the data are sufficiently detailed to make these guesses by far the most likely outcomes. However, some unresolvable uncertainty remains. The final totals of Cooper, Hornby and Lucas indicate that they had more losses actually played rather than defaulted than are indicated here, but against whom is not clear. I have recorded as unplayed Cooper's games against Lucas, Blackett, Coates, Lintott, Dickson, Burns, Steele, and Sedgefield. All were recorded as losses for Cooper and wins for these eight opponents, but seven of them were defaulted by Cooper and one of them was actually played. I cannot identify which was played. Similarly, Hornby's losses to Baynes, Hammond, Steel, Lulman, Runting, and Lintott are all recorded here as unplayed, but three of them were defaulted and three were actually played. Again, I cannot identify which three were played. Also, Lucas's losses to Coates and Stephen are recorded here as unplayed, but one of the two was actually played and I do not know which. Finally, I found five draws listed amongst the results for Coates, but the list of final total results for the tournament say he had six. Against whom the sixth draw was played, if indeed there was one, is not clear. Amongst the listed results for Lintott and Runting are two and three draws, respectively, but the list of final totals indicate four for Lintott and one for Runting. Strangely, both give a combined count for the two players of five draws, but the records of individual games and the listed tournament totals do not match. I use here the records of individual games. An early list of competitors before the tournament started lists a 'McCarthy' who subsequently disappeared. Also, G.W. Rusden was in the initial weeks pairing lists, but withdrew before actually playing. Geary only played six games and eventually withdrew. Cooper and Cross played many more games but also withdrew before the end. Candler also defaulted his last few games. |
