Notes: |
Only partial results available. This was a 24-player tournament, probably on the knock-out format. The only result I have is that of the final between Watts and McCombe, which was intended to be for the best of three games. When the score was +1-0=2 for Watts, a disagreement arose as to whether the draws were to count. It seems that Watts eventually was considered the winner, but I find no record of a formal announcement of this in the newspapers of the time (see the Argus of 26 Mar. 1856, p.5). The Australian Chess Annual of 1896 (p.45) says that 'Mr. Watts was acknowledged the first champion of Victoria'. Since the argument arose in Feb. 1856, I assume that play stopped then, though the final decision had still not been made as of 16 Mar. 1856. |
