Notes: |
Yanofsky has 'M. Princhard', 'J. Casey', and 'H. Taylor' at this event; Di Felice has 'Punchard', 'Casey, George Elliott', and 'Taylor, G.H.'; Gaige has just 'Punchard', 'Casey' and 'Taylor'. G.H. Taylor was an English player in the 1860s, so I take this to be H. Taylor. The British Chess Magazine also has 'Punchard' and I have his full name 'Charles Punchard' from correspondence from David Cohen. Di Felice gives start date Feb. 9, 1884, but the British Chess Magazine gives Jan. 30. The Ottawa Daily Citizen of 31 Jan. 1884 (p.4) says that play was to start that afternoon, and the Ottawa Daily Citizen of 1 Feb. 1884 (p.1) says that play would resume that day. The winner of the tournament, F.X. Lambert, is announced in the 7 Feb. 1884 issue of the Ottawa Daily Citizen (p.4), so I guess that it finished on 6 Feb. 1884. |
