| Manuel Golmayo recollected years later, in the Madrid newspaper ABC, that Celsito Golmayo had beaten Vazquez 3-0 in the play-off of the 1897 Championship of the Havana Club. In El Ajedrez Magistral (vol. 2, p.49), Vazquez says two games were played in the play-off, but without specifying the result, and says it was the 1896 championship. Walter Chan (personal communication) suggests a 2-0 result, given that M. Golmayo was writing many years later when he give the 3-0 result, and suggests that the play-off may have occurred in 1897, even if the main part of the tournament was in 1896. |
