Name: Hartford Club Handicap
Place: Hartford
Start date: 6 Oct. 1873
End date: Dec. 1873

Notes:
This was an all-play-all handicap tournament with three rounds. Results of the first two rounds are given in Oct. to Dec. 1873 issues of the Hartford Weekly Times, but I have not been able to find the 1874 issues, so I have no results of the third round. In the original announcement (Hartford Weekly Times, 11 Oct. 1873), 16 players names (and handicap classes) were listed, but four of these (Capt. O'Farrell, E.H. Hyde, Jr., J.S. Crooks, and F.W. Lord) did not appear in the first list of scores (Hartford Weekly Times, 18 Oct. 1873), and so presumably dropped out before playing, but the remaining 12 were joined by J.M. Plimpton to make 13. Plimpton's handicap class can be deduced from his game against Cunningham given in the Hartford Weekly Times of 25 Oct. 1873, which was played even (no handicap on either side). The scores of the completed first round listed in the 8 Nov. 1873 Hartford Weekly Times omits J.B. Cook, but his score must have been +1-11=0 in order for the totals to add up correctly. This is consistent with his partial score of +1-3=0 given in the 18 Oct. 1873 issue. It is possible that he dropped out before the end of the round and lost his remaining games by default, which would be a reason for his omission in the list, but there is no other indication of any defaulted games, so I will take his +1-11=0 result for rating. Hart and Cook then dropped out before the second round (Hartford Weekly Times 15 Nov. 1873). Total scores of the other players are thus out of 22 games, two games against each of the remaining 10 opponents, plus one each against Hart and Cook. Scores listed in the Hartford Weekly Times consistently include a half point under 'won' for each drawn game, but not under 'lost'.
