End date: Sep. 1858 |

Notes: |
The result of the first round pairing between Cheney and Wilkinson was +1-0=1 for Cheney after the first report in the Syracuse Daily Standard (4 Sep. 1858). Two wins were required to go on to the second round, but the match was postponed because of an illness. I am guessing that this finally went +2-0=1 for Cheney, since he passed on to the second round, though Wilkinson might have got a win or there may have been draws. The reports in the Syracuse Daily Standard say that T.M. Fry, Fitch and Fiske each won their second game on particular days in the first round to pass on to the second round. I am guessing that this implies a 2-0 result in each case, since no other game is mentioned, though this could be wrong. In the second round the result to date in the 4 Sep. 1858 issue is 1-1, so the final result must have been 2-1 for Fiske, since Fiske went on to the final, though there may have been draws. The result of the other second round pairing, Cheney-Fitch, and of the final Fiske-Cheney, are not known other than who won, so I record these as 1-0 results. |
