All-play-all handicap tournament, though not all games were played. The Philadelphia (Daily) Evening Bulletin has complete results. Bennett defaulted most of his games, all apart from losses to Hergesheimer and Sayen. As usual, defaulted games are not included for rating purposes. The initial report in the 1 Oct. 1864 issue said that there were 15 players. It appears that only 14 played in the end. The first report (1 Oct. 1864) has a 'Mr. N--', but subsequent reports have just 'Mr. --', but these are almost certainly the same player, since both are listed as in 3rd class, and there are no overlaps in games (no opponent of Mr. N-- is the same as an opponent of Mr. --). Furthermore, Reichhelm's book Chess in Philadelphia (p.10) gives a list of players in the tournament, though only 11 of the 14 are listed, including Dr. L.C. Newman in Class C (but missing Knox, McCorkle and Walden). Thus, it seems clear that Mr. N-- and Mr. -- are Dr. L.C. Newman. Reichhelm's book also says that Jellett won with 19 to 2, though the final report in the Philadelphia (Daily) Evening Bulletin (19 Nov. 1864) says that he won with 10 to 2, which is consistent with the results given in the previous reports, including forfeits. |
