Event data |
Name: 5th New Jersey State Tournament - Championship |
Place: New Brunswick and Elizabeth |
Start date: 22 Feb. 1890 |
End date: Mar. 1890 |
|
Notes: |
This was a 16-player tournament in which players played different numbers of games, though it was not a knock-out format. Draws were replayed. The results in Walker's History of the New Jersey Chess Association (p.10) are not consistent with the reports in the Newark Sunday Call. For example, Walker's scores show no losses for van Dyke, Brown, or C. Hymes, but the Newark Sunday Call reports losses for all three, and Walker gives Keyes' score as +3-0, but the Newark Sunday Call mentions 4 wins by Keyes. Results given in the Newark Sunday Call are assumed correct here. There is selection bias in reporting these few results, but it probably gives a fair indication of the relative strengths of the strongest players, so I include them for rating here. |
