Event data |
Name: Saint Catherines Championship |
Place: Saint Catherines |
Start date: Feb. 1862 |
End date: Mar. 1862 |
|
Notes: |
This was a 20-player knock-out tournament, but in the first round, three players 'resigned' without playing, so R. Currie beat A.G. Hill by default, A. Mittleberger beat James Benson by default, and T.D. Phillipps beat T.H. Graydon by default. After the second round there were 5 winners, but D.D. Hobson (drawn from the losers by lot), who lost in the second round to C. Hamilton, also continued to the third round, to make 6 players in that round. Thus, there were 3 winners from the third round, but again, R. Currie (drawn from the losers by lot), who lost to G.A. Groves in the third round, also continued to the fourth round, to make 4 players in that round. The two winners from the 4th round (Groves and C. Hamilton) played off in the fifth. |
