Biographical data |
Name: Phillipps, Thomas Dowell |
Also known as: Rev. Thomas Dowell Phillipps |
Born: 1833 |
Died: 6 Jan. 1915 |
|
Notes: |
Cohen says that 'Thomas Phillipps' played in the Canadian Championships of 1874, 1879 and 1881. The Toronto Globe of Sept. 9, 1874 also has 'Phillips' at Montreal 1874. But Yanofsky has 'R.D. Philippe' at Ottawa 1881. Is Yanofsky mistaken or was it R.D. Philippe at all these events, or were there two distinct players, Phillipps and Philippe? Di Felice has 'Phillips, Thomas Dowell' at New York 1903. The Canadian Illustrated News of 14 Jun. 1873 has 'J.D. Phillips', almost certainly a misprint for T.D. Phillipps. The Dubuque Chess Journal of Jul. 1875 (p.349) has the spelling 'Thos. D. Phillips'. |
