This was a 23-player double-round all-play-all tournament. The report cited by Bogdanovich and Lissowski specifically says that each player played 44 games. Scores, however, were calculated by ignoring draws, and subtracting losses from wins. Thus, when it says that the top four were Winawer with 34 wins, Kleczynski with 32 wins, Rozanski with 27 wins and Landau with 23 wins, we should interpret these as numbers of wins minus numbers of losses. Then, we can deduce that adding these scores to the number of games played (i.e., 44) and dividing by 2 gives the usual score of number of wins plus 1/2 the number of draws: (W + D + L = 44; W - L = Score given, imply 2W+D = 44 + Score given). Thus, we find, according to the usual scoring, and the one we must use for rating, the four scores as 39, 38, 35.5, and 33.5. Note that if 34, 32, 27 and 23 were the full conventional scores, then the other 19 players would have to have an average score of over 20.5, which is implausible, but with 39, 38, 35.5 and 33.5, the other 19 have an average score of about 18.95, which is quite feasible. Six additional players in this event, whose scores we don't know, were B. Winawer, D. Winawer, Khodorovsky, A. Shchavinsky, Sh. Metal, and Albert Szczawiński. |
