Notes: |
The report in the City of London Chess Magazine came shortly before the end of the tournament. Four games are not accounted for by the scores given (which total 52 instead of 56, the total for an 8-player double-round all-play-all tournament). The report indicates that Maltby resigned (withdrew). It is not clear what games had not been played. However, Ballard and Sonneborn are listed with scores 10.5 and 9.5, respectively, while the Field of 15 Apr. 1876 says that they finished with scores of 11.5 and 10.5 respectively. I assume then that this accounts for two of the four unplayed games from the earlier report. I will guess that Maltby's games against Humphreys, and Donisthorpe were the other two not played, but if this is wrong, the ratings will be slightly off, though not too far. |
