Notes: |
Only partial results available. This was a 16-player knockout tournament. The Schachzeitung of 1 Sep. 1867 (cover) gives the names of all 16 participants. The 15 Sep. 1867 Schachzeitung (p.293) gives the names of the 8 first-round winners, the 4 second-round winners, and the 2 third-round winners, without specifying who beat who. It does mention that in the first round Riefenstahl won over Thyssen by lot, after several drawn games were played. I will guess at 3 draws, though the exact number is not stated. The Dec. 1867 Schachzeitung (pp.376-379) gives 7 of the games from this tournament, which enables one to reconstruct some of the pairings and the likely winners of those pairings. It seems likely that there was only one game per pairing, but if there were more, there is a possibility, despite a won game being given, that the loser of that game eventually won a best-of-three competition to advance. This seems unlikely however, and I will assume that the winner of a won game actually won the pairing. Thus, aside from the Riefenstahl-Thyssen result, we have first round wins by Kohtz over Schnitzler, Leffmann over Kockelkorn and Buss over Hammacher (both Eduard and Emil Hammacher were in this tournament and lost in the first round, so I am only guessing that it was Eduard Hammacher who lost to Buss here). In addition to Riefenstahl, Kohtz, Leffmann and Buss, the other first round winners were C. Höing, Schuster, A. Keller, and F.A. Hipp. Aside from Thyssen, Schnitzler, Kockelkorn and Eduard and Emil Hammacher, the other players who lost in the first round were R. Lichtenscheidt, Alfred Schlieper, and E. Neuhaus. In the second round, we have a win by Riefenstahl over Hipp. The other winners were Buss, Keller, and Kohtz, and the other losers were Höing, Schuster, and Leffmann. In the third round we have wins by Kohtz over Keller and by Buss over Riefenstahl. And in the final, we have a win by Kohtz over Buss, and we have the statement in the Crefeld 1871 tournament book that Kohtz won here in the end. Also, Riefenstahl gave up 3rd prize to Keller without playing for it. |
