| The scores given by Di Felice (citing The Records of Australian Chess by John van Manen (Vol.3) are impossible. They add to 66 as they should for a 12-player single-round all-play-all tournament, but the bottom three players have scores of 1, 1, and 0, respectively, which is not possible since amongst themselves they should have played 3 games, and thus must have at least 3 points between them. The Hebrew Standard of Australia of 1 Mar. 1945 (p.3) has scores to date in which Slutzkin and S. Isaacs already have 1 point each and Hertzberg has 0. The Hebrew Standard of Australia of 22 Mar. 1945 (p.6) has final scores which match Di Felice's except that Ehrenreich is shown with a score of 3, instead of 4, as in Di Felice. Thus, these scores add only to 65, suggesting that one game was not played. If we assume that it was one of the games between the bottom three players, then the scores become feasible. I will guess, rather arbitrarily, that the game Slutzkin - S. Isaacs was not played, though it might have been the game between one of them and Hertzberg. Di Felice gives end date as Apr. 1945, but the Hebrew Standard of Australia of 22 Mar. 1945 says that it finished on 15 Mar. 1945. |
