Notes:
Joost van Winsen gives the starting date as 'probably' Jan. 1856; it is mentioned in the 12 Jan. 1856 issue of Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper. The Albion of 2 Aug. 1856 says that the final game was played 'on Tuesday last', i.e., 29 July 1856. The Albion of 12 Jul. 1856 indicates that another tournament was going on at the New York Club at the same time, which had just been won by Marache. Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper of 23 Aug. 1856 also describes these two tournaments (both without odds), and mentions a handicap tournament still in progress, including Fiske, Loyd, and Fosdick.
