Name: Café de la Régence Tournament - final |
Place: Paris |
Start date: 1860 |
End date: May 1860 |
|
Notes: |
Only results of final available. This was a 46-player event with players in 5 classes. The Apr. 1860 issue of La (Nouvelle) Régence (p.122) gives the names of the 9 first class players, Lequesne, Kolisch, Disdier, de Rivière, Martin Saint-Léon, Durantel, and Guibert, who won in the first round (though Guibert had a bye), and Budzinski and Chapelle, who lost in the first round. The 14 Apr. 1860 issue of the Illustrated London News (p.366) gives the names of 7 players who were winning at that point, presumably in the highest class. The 19 May 1860 issue (p.486) says 'Four separate tourneys have been fought, at the end of which three combatants only remained...', Kolisch of class 1, Allix of class 3 and Buccheister of class 4. The final consisted of a handicapped play-off between these three. Only two games were played to decide the winner. The 'Allix' here was not 'F.W. Allix', who wrote in the following week to clarify that he was not at the Paris tournament. |
