| Staunton, in the Illustrated London News of 23 Apr. 1864 (p.403), says that the match took place 'on Wednesday week', which I take to mean Wed. 13 Apr. 1864 (though it might have been 6 Apr. 1864). The 'Parratt' playing for the County team must be Walter Parratt, earlier from Yorkshire, but living at this time at Witley, near Stourport, in Worcestershire (Illustrated London News, 11 June 1864, p.579). I am not sure whether the player named 'Freer' in this event was 'H. Freer' or 'A. Freer', but guess at the former, since I have found earlier mentions of H. Freer, but the earliest mention of A. Freer I have is in Dec. 1873. |
