Tim Harding (personal correspondence) sent a crosstable from the Dublin Evening Mail of 12 Sept. 1895. The crosstable he provides has an obvious error in that Miss Thomas' draw against Mrs. Stocker is misattributed as a half point to Mrs. Nicholson. In addition, Harding points out that the totals do not correspond with the statement in the column that Dobell came 2nd, Bowles 3rd and Nicholson 4th. He suggests that the game Thomas-Dobell, though credited in the table to Thomas, might have been won by Dobell, which would account for the discrepancy. I have adopted this suggestion as the list of prize-winners is likely to be correct. The crosstable in the Hastings and St. Leonards Observer of 7 Sep. 1895 (p.6) also has an error in that Stocker is shown with a win against Thomas, but Thomas with a draw against Stocker. The Dublin Evening Mail may have tried to correct this obvious error, but put the draw in the wrong spot. Clearly Thomas-Stocker was a draw. |
