Notes: |
Identities of a number of the players are not certain. The crosstable given in the Chess Player's Chronicle has some errors, but these can be rectified by adjusting the inconsistencies in the table entries to match the total scores given at the right of the table. For example, Newham gets a half point aginst Jones, but there is a blank for Jones against Newham, so clearly he should half a half point there, which then makes his total 6.5 as is listed on the right. Raymond is shown with a win over Collins and a draw against F.A. Hill, and his total score looks correct. But Collins is shown as getting a draw against Raymond, instead of F.A. Hill. Reversing these makes their total scores correct. Finally, W.E. Hill is shown with a win against Miss Thorold, but Miss Thorold is shown as getting a draw against W.E. Hill. Her total score matches the crosstable, while W.E. Hill's does not, so this game must have been a draw. The crosstable shos that the game between Newham and Wilkinson was unplayed, and uncounted in the scores. The British Chess Magazine gives scores for the top 4 players a half point above the scores listed in the Chess Player's Chronicle. This may be related to the withdrawal of Mary Rudge, but the Chess Player's Chronicle says she 'retired without playing', so it is unclear why the British Chess Chronicle has different scores. |
