There was also a G.H. Newham, active at the same time. La Grande Storia degli Scacchi lists 'Newham, GH' in the crosstable for Malvern 1871; Di Felice gives 'Newham, William Leighton' in his crosstable for this event. The Illustrated London News (19 Aug. 1871, p.163) gives 'G.H. Newham' in the tournament but indicates that W.L. Newham was also present at the meeting. However, the Westminster Papers (1 Sept. 1871, p.78) have Rev. W.L. Newham in the tournament. So there is some confusion between these two players even in contemporary sources. The Chess Players' Quarterly Chronicle of Oct. 1870 (vol.2, p.150) has 'Rev. W.L. Newman', corrected to 'Rev. W.L. Newham' on p.187 of the Dec. 1870 issue.
