Hooper and Whyld and Di Felice give a score of +7-7=1 between these players in 1845, but La Grande Storia degli Scacchi gives the year as 1842 in one place and 1845 in another and Giffen gives it as 1842. Spinrad mentions both dates. Di Felice gives a separate event with a score of +4-3 in 1842 and Le Palamède (15 Nov. 1842, p.233) gives an (unfinished) match result of +9-9=1 in 1842. The Schachzeitung of Dec. 1847 (pp.392-393) gives the result +7-7=1 'a few years ago'. So there was certainly a match in 1842, but whether there was actually another one in 1845 remains in doubt. However, I have taken the 1845 result on the strength of Hooper and Whyld, and the definite score given in the Schachzeitung, different from the score in the 1842 Le Palamède. How formal a match this was is unclear. Dubois, in Rivista scacchistica italiana, says they were even in a series of games played in 1846 or 1847. This presumably refers to the 1845 series. |
