Hooper and Whyld, and Di Felice give a score of +7-7=1 between these players in 1845, but La Grande Storia degli Scacchi gives the year as 1842 in one place and 1845 in another and Giffen gives it as 1842. Spinrad mentions both dates. Di Felice gives a separate event with a score of +4-3 in 1842 and Le Palamède (15 Nov. 1842, p.233) gives an (unfinished) match result of +9-9=1 in 1842. So whether there were actually 2 matches, one in 1842 and one in 1845 remains in doubt. However, I have taken the 1845 result on the strength of Hooper and Whyld. How formal a match this was is unclear. |
