The Löwenthal page at Sarah's Chess Journal gives +2-1 for Löwenthal; Feenstra Kuiper, Golombek, Di Felice and Spinrad give +5-4 for Löwenthal. Feenstra Kuiper, Di Felice and Spinrad give the date as 1846, but Spinrad also lists a result under 1850 in which Hamppe lost to Löwenthal in the ratio 4 to 5. This comes from the Chess Player's Chronicle (v.11, Oct. 1850, p.289), also cited in Kings, Commoners and Knaves (p.51), where it is stated that Hamppe 'has been defeated by' Löwenthal 'since he won [sic] in the ratio four to five'. This information may all come from the Schachzeitung of Aug. 1850 (p.283) which gives this ratio, but no specification of date. This probably refers to the 1846 match; it could not in any case have occurred in 1850 since Löwenthal was in the United States for that entire year. However, the 15 May 1852 (p.395), 3 July 1852 (p.11) and 4 Sep. 1852 (p.187) issues of the Illustrated London News and the Oct. 1852 issue of the Chess Player's Chronicle (p.300) mention a later match. |
