Notes: |
This does not seem to have been considered a formal match, but there was a stake on each game. According to van Winsen's biography of Mason, years later (in 1885) Mason claimed to have won 3-0. The Maryland Chess Review of Mar. 1875 said Mason won 4-0. The Dubuque Chess Journal of May 1875 said Martínez won +3-1=1 (but this repeats Martínez' score against Mason in their next encounter in Mar. 1875 in Philadelphia). Finally, Martínez years later (in 1885) denied that he had played with Mason in New York. In volume VII of Mackenzie, Mason and Co., van Winsen cites Forest and Stream of 18 Feb. 1875 to support the result of 4-0 given in the Maryland Chess Review. |
