| This does not seem to have been considered a formal match, but there was probably a stake on each game, as with MartÃnez' games with Mason and Mackenzie on this visit by MartÃnez to New York. In his biography of Mason, van Winsen gives the score as +3-1=1 for Martinez, citing the Maryland Chess Review of Mar. 1875, but in volume VII of Mackenzie, Mason and Co. (pp.108, 167) he gives the score as +3-1=0 for Martinez, citing Forest and Stream of 18 Feb. 1875, but mentions the discrepancy with the later report in the Maryland Chess Review. |
