| Le Palamède (1847, 2nd ser., v.7, p.565) gives +3-1=2 for Lowe. Beeby, Sergeant, Feenstra Kuiper, Di Felice, Spinrad, Alberti and Mark Weeks give +4-1=2 for Lowe. Steinitz gives +4-1-1 for Lowe in the Field of 4 Jul. 1874. Murray (in the British Chess Magazine, 1908, quoted by Sarah's Chess Journal) says this match took place 'during the winter of 1847-8'; Feenstra Kuiper, Spinrad and Mark Weeks give date 1847; Di Felice gives Dec. 1847; Sergeant says it started in Dec. 1847. The Chess Player's Chronicle of 25 Dec. 1847 gives the first 2 games; games 3-5 are given in the Jan. 1848 issue and the last 2 games were not printed there. Le Palamède gives its result (+3-1=2) on pp.565-566 of the issue dated Dec. 1847 (though earlier issues mention being behind schedule), but perhaps before the last game was played. I will guess that the match began in Dec. 1847 and finished in Jan. 1848. Interestingly, Staunton says in the 14 Oct. 1848 issue of the Illustrated London News (p.234) that the games that were published in the Chess Player's Chronicle 'appeared, exactly in the proportion in which they were won and lost'. Either this is incorrect or the result we have from Beeby is incorrect, because the games published in the Chess Player's Chronicle amount to +2-1=2 for Lowe, and Beeby gives +4-1=2 overall. |
