Notes: |
According to van Winsen's biography of Mason (p.90), in a letter dated 26 Mar. 1876 Bird claimed to have won 27-20 against Mason including their formal match. Subtracting the match results means that Bird had then won 21-7 in offhand games, 18 of which were played in Dec. 1875 and the other 10 in early 1876. Van Winsen says in volume VII of Mackenzie, Mason and Co. (p.107) that Bird had a majority of 12 before their formal match started on 28 Dec. 1875, so the earlier December offhand score should have been +15-3 for Bird, while the post-formal match score in early 1876 should have been +6-4 for Bird. I will record these separately here. The 15-3 result includes a score of +3-1 for Bird on 15 Dec. and +7-1 either all on 19 Dec. 1875 or up to that date. |
