Part of a match in which Löwenthal gave odds in different games (in rotation?) of: Knight; giving mate on a particular square; Pawn and Two Moves; Pawn and Move. The odds are specified in that order and Löwenthal lost the first game (giving Knight odds) and won the other 4; so I presume it is implied that the fifth game was at Knight odds again. Löwenthal's first letter appears in the Apr. 1853 issue of the Chess Player's Chronicle, where he says (p.117) that he started his trip to various provincial clubs 'about the middle of last month', which might mean Feb. or Mar. 1853, depending when the letter was written. I will guess that these visits took place in Feb. 1853. |
