An Evans Gambit match, in which Bird chose to play the defense. Although I don't usually use matches with a pre-determined opening unless the two players alternate sides, here Bird proposed the match, with a preference for playing the defense, so we cannot really say he was disadvantaged. The first game appeared in The Field of 3 Jan. 1880 with the date 'Monday last', hence 29 Jan. 1879. Bird, in his Bird's Modern Chess, said he won the second game and the intended third was not played. Harding gives the date of the second game as 6 Jan. 1880. |
