| Feenstra Kuiper, Di Felice, and Zavatarelli give the result of this match combined with their subsequent match in 1857 as +7-7=3; the Illustrated London News (25 Apr. 1857, p.393) gives the combined total as +6-6=5, which agrees with reports in the Era and Bell's Life in London, and which I take to be correct. Thus, this first match was +2-1 for Bird, the subsequent one +5-4=5 for Falkbeer. Bell's Life in London on 18 Jan. 1857 (p.5) and the Chess Player's Chronicle of Apr. 1859 (p.97) give the result of the first match as +2-1 for Bird, and the Era of 4 Jan. 1857 (p.13) also says that Bird won. The New York Clipper of 28 Feb. 1857, however, gives the result of the first match as +2-1 for Falkbeer. Sunnucks, Hooper and Whyld give the year of this first match as 1856. The report in the 1859 Chess Player's Chronicle attributes it to 1857. The 7 Dec. 1856 issue of the Era (p.14) says the match was in progress and had started on 29 Nov. 1856. The 4 Jan. 1857 issue (p.13) says it was finished in Dec. 1856. The 18 Jan. 1857 issue of Bell's Life in London says that games were played on Saturdays. The partial result up to 10 Jan. 1857 given there suggests that one game was played each Saturday from 29 Nov. 1856 until at least 10 Jan. 1857, with no pause between the two matches. This would suggest that the third game of this first match was played on 13 Dec. 1856. |
