Notes: |
According to Sergeant's 'A Century of British Chess' (p.94), the match was abandoned after a single game when Harrwitz left for Paris. Spinrad gives the date as 1855, but Sergeant has 1856 and in the Apr. 1859 issue of the Chess Player's Chronicle (p.99), the 22 Aug. 1857 issue of the Illustrated London News (p.195), the 16 Aug. 1857 issue of the Era (p.5), and the 12 and 26 Sep. 1857 issues of the New York Clipper, a match abandoned after a single drawn game between these players is described as taking place at the Manchester meeting of 5 to 11 Aug. 1857, and the Era of 16 Aug. 1857 (p.5) gives the date as 6 Aug. 1857. |
