Spinrad gives this result from the New York Times of 21 Oct. 1858. Sarah's Morphy website suggests that these games were played when Morphy first visited the Saint George's Chess Club after his arrival in London in June 1858. This is consistent with the fact that they are mentioned in a letter by Edge dated 9 July 1858. Lawson says Morphy first visited the St. George's Club on 23 June 1858 and that Hampton was the first person he played, so perhaps these games were played that day. |
