Notes: |
This event is described in the 1st number of Le Palamède to appear in 1839, saying that Walker visited Paris that winter and played these games against Boncourt just before his departure. It also is described in Bell's Life in London of 16 Dec. 1838. Thus, I take the date to be late 1838, but Winter quotes Diggle who gives the year as 1839; Spinrad and La Grande Storia degli Scacchi concur. Le Palamède and Diggle give the result as +2-0=1 for Boncourt, as does La Grande Storia degli Scacchi. However, Bell's Life in London (16 Dec. 1838) says that 4 or 5 games were played, with 'the advantage on the side of the Frenchman'. |
