Di Felice gives +3-0=0; Sarah's Morphy website, Taylor Kingston, Bird quoted in the Brooklyn Eagle (17 Jan. 1892), Edge (p.200), Lawson (p.114), Bell's Life in London of 22 Aug. 1858 (p.3) and the Era of 22 Aug. 1858 (p.5) give +10-1=1; Spinrad also gives 10.5-1.5. An obituary in the New York Times (11 July 1884) gives 10-1 for Morphy. Harding says that the result +3-0=0 for Morphy was for the more serious games between the two, out of the total number of games they played. The Spirit of the Times of 13 Nov. 1858 has +9-1=1. Sarah's Morphy website gives the date as sometime between 14 Aug. and 21 Aug. 1858. Lawson also indicates that these games were played while Morphy was waiting for a reply from his letter to Staunton of 14 Aug. 1858. |
