Notes: |
Di Felice and Sergeant give +6-1=3 for Morphy; Golombek gives +6-1=4 for Morphy. Spinrad gives +5-0=1 (from a website he considers unreliable) and +5-1=3 from the New York Times. Sarah's Boden page gives +5-1=1. In a letter by Edge dated 9 July 1858, Edge gives +3-1=2, but Morphy and Boden may have played more games after that, as in 'Exploits' (p.200) Edge gives +5-1=3. Bell's Life in London of 22 Aug. 1858 (p.3) and the Chess Monthly of June 1858 (p.198) also give +5-1=3, but the latter adds that another game was won by Morphy on his last visit to London (in 1859, recorded separately here). The games must have been played between Morphy's arrival in England in June and the end of Aug. 1858, after which he left for Paris. Since Lawson gives one game a date of June 1858 and another a date of Aug. 1858, the series must have started and ended in those months. |
