Notes:
Edge (p.149) says that Lécrivain scored 'some two games to Morphy's six or seven', Morphy giving Pawn and Two Move odds. However, on p.202 Edge gives +5-2=0 for Morphy over Lécrivain at odds of Pawn and Two Moves, as does Staunton in the Illustrated London News of 11 Sept. 1858 (p.245), Löwenthal in the Era of 12 Sept. 1858 (p.12), Walker in Bell's Life in London of 21 Nov. 1858 (p.3), Falkbeer in the Sunday Times of 5 Dec. 1858 (p.10) and Lange (p.209). Lawson (p.128) says Morphy won 7 out of 9. The New York Clipper and Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper of 2 Oct. 1858 and the Chess Monthly of Nov. 1858 (p.346) give +7-0=2 for Morphy, but the Dec. 1858 issue of the Chess Monthly (p.381) gives +5-2=0 for Morphy. Edge (p.149) says that Morphy played these games against Lécrivain on his first visit to the Café de la Régence, which, according to Lawson, was on 2 Sept. 1858.
