| This was the first of three matches between Boden and Owen in 1858. Feenstra Kuiper and Di Felice give +7-2=2 for Boden; Zavatarelli, and Hooper and Whyld give +7-3=2 for Boden. Sunnucks and the Chess Player's Chronicle (Mar. 1859) say there were two matches, Boden winning the first +5-3=1 and the second +5-1=0. The latter refers to the third match, so presumably the first is meant to be a score for the first match. Sergeant agrees with the Chess Player's Chronicle except that he gives the result of the first match as +5-2=1 for Boden. La Grande Storia degli Scacchi gives 8-3, also given by Spinrad from Schach Datenbank. The Illustrated London News of 13 Feb. 1858 (p.174) gives a game from the match 'now playing', so it was in progress then. The 7 Feb. 1858 issue of the Era (p.14) says the match has been arranged and gives the result of the first game, so I will guess that it started at the beginning of Feb. 1858. The 27 Mar. 1858 issue of the Illustrated London News (p.330) gives the result so far as +7-2=1 for Boden. The 21 Mar. 1858 issue of the Era (p.13) gives the final result as +7-2=1. The 28 Mar. 1858 issue of the Sunday Times (supplement, p.3) and the 4 Apr. 1858 issue of Bell's Life in London (p.3) give +7-2=2. |
